Before moving from Valenza to Enschede in the Netherlands, Dario Scapitta took with him the goldsmith tradition, one that has been passed on in the family for generations.
Today he is a designer who in his resume mentions Stage and costume design studies at Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, as a key step to realize his aspirations, but the discovery of the potential of CAD software and 3D printing during the master specialization at the Academy of Art and Crafts of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, has opened the door to a new way of conceiving the jewelry.
Maybe it’s an innate predisposition or maybe thanks to the exposure to different cultures that picking up trends and turning them into drawings and creations seems very natural to him. “Everything I see can be turned into a wearable object.” And in this way a rose, for example, becomes a collection, such as the BLACK ROSE.
He uses precious metals and alternative materials in making his jewelry but the technique of rapid prototyping with 3D printing (rapid manufacturing) is one that allows him to give a shape to very complicated objects like a one piece chain.
Everything I see can be turned into a wearable object.
His job is to translate the inspiration, the idea, the flash that will not let him sleep in a decorative object or function, and the material used makes it different.
“I could never stop creating, my mind never stops thinking of new forms.” Says Dario Scapitta, and his two new collections: MONOLITE and SNAKE Essential, presented in February at White Bijoux, made in 3d, not in polymer, but this time in metal, confirm his creativity.
MONOLITE is the elegance of simplicity. It is inspired by the stones and captures the simplicity and strength that are perpetuated for centuries. An intimate relationship with Nature. Rounded forms meet rough metal surfaces and glossy enamels in a game of sensations of touch.
The new SNAKE essential differs from the original in reduced lines and dimensions. The lightness of nylon has been substituted by steel in pure colors of bronze and black combined with raw and rough surfaces to express the desire for simplicity and purity.
Both are made with the help of 3D printing using stainless steel and plating (shiny gold, polished bronze, matte black and polished steel for MONOLITE and polished bronze and matte black for SNAKE Essential). Each piece is printed layer by layer starting from a very fine steel powder mixed with a liquid, a practice that recalls the fragility of a sand castle. Once printed the pieces are infused in bronze and the result is a solid and rough metal that is later gold plated using electrolysis. The pieces are covered with a special protective layer. The enamel is applied afterwards: a mixture of resin and black pigment coating only some parts of the piece. The packaging is handmade in Germany using cardboard. The jewels are all made in Holland.
